Facts About Yellow Toenails and Treatment

Yellow toenails is a toenail fungus that affects your toenails and can cause pain. This fungal infection has several different symptoms that require treatment as soon as possible.

Yellow toenails is a nail fungus infection. The scientific name is called, Onychomycosis. Onychomycosis is an infection of the nails caused from a fungus. We all have bacteria in our bodies, some of them are good for us and some are bad. Too much bacteria can lead into infections.  Nail fungus infections is a common fungal infection that happens to many people.  You will see it occasionally on fingernails but more often on toenails. It is more common on toenails than fingernails because of the moisture and warmth that gets trapped in and under the toenails. Children aren’t seen with toenail fungus very often. This infection is seen more in adults. This fungus will be seen more on the big toe than any other toe.

Nail fungus is very contagious. It is important not to use the same towels, shoes or socks that other people have used.  Be sure to wear shoes or sandals in public bathrooms, public showers and swimming pool areas. It is recommended to allow air to get to your feet for at least several hours a day. Take off your shoes and socks and let your feet air out once in a while.  Allow the warmth and moisture to escape. Be sure to dry your feet thoroughly after a bath or shower before putting your socks on. These are all good precautions to follow  that will help keep you from getting toenail fungus.

Some of the symptoms that you will notice if you have toenail fungus is a change in color such as white streaks or yellow streaks, weak nails that tend to break often or are very brittle or toenails lifting away from your skin. The nail could completely break off.  If you think that you may be getting this fungus infection, act on it as soon as possible. Contact your doctor right away. The sooner you treat this fungal infection, the easier and quicker it will be to get rid of it.

There are a couple of topical ointments that have been used as a treatment to help get rid of toenail fungus. They are called Zetaclear and Funginix. These two ointments have been used and have been successful in treatment for nail fungus. There are also some oral medications that a doctor can prescribe as treatment to help get rid of toenail fungus, but there are known side effects to taking these oral medications.   One of the side effects for taking these oral medications is liver damage.
