Prevention and Home Remedies for ACL Injury, Knee Injury, Knee Pain

Though ACL injuries do happen, there are ways to help prevent the injury from occurring in the first place. Practicing in a sport is fun and healthy; but, can become unhealthy if the person taking up the sport does not exercise and learn the proper technique to use while practicing the various moves necessary for those sports.

Surgical reconstruction is not always necessary when the knee ligament has been torn in an ACL injury.

If you are not an athlete intending on going back to your career, you may just need some home care and strengthening exercises to get your knee back to functioning normally again. Rehabilitation does not happen overnight, but rest assured, you can get your knee to co-operate with you again in time. You may have to give up sports that do add pressure to the knee though it all depends upon your particular situation and the severity of the injury. Your doctor will be the best person to determine if you need surgery or not. With or without surgery there is no getting around it, self-care treatments are necessary.

Home treatments

Rest

Use crutches to take the weight off the injury when you have to walk

Use ice on the knee to bring down the swelling when you are resting.

Use a compression or elastic band around the knee to help keep the swelling down.

When you lie down, keep your knee propped up on a pillow.

Take over-the-counter medications to keep the pain away.

Preventing ACL knee injury

Though ACL injuries do happen, there are ways to help prevent the injury from occurring in the first place. Practicing in a sport is fun and healthy; but, can become unhealthy if the person taking up the sport does not exercise and learn the proper technique to use while practicing the various moves necessary for those sports.

If you are concerned you might be subject to one of these injuries and even if you are not, do knee strengthening exercises such as strengthening and stability exercises, aerobic conditioning, plyometric exercises, "jump training" and risk-awareness training. A sports medicine doctor or personal trainer, rehabilitation center, or physio therapist can help you get on a proper training program. You will also want to include some balancing exercises in your regime.

Since women are prone to an ACL injury, it is important for them to make sure to strengthen both their quadriceps and hamstrings.

Make sure you learn how to jump and descend properly or how do move in any sport to prevent an ACL injury. Technique training is recommended for athletes and people who participate in sports. These exercise regimes will also strengthen hip muscles.

Make sure you are wearing the right gear for the sport you are participating in and that you are wearing that gear properly. For example, in down hill skiing. make sure the ski bindings are adjusted correctly (by a trained professional) to make sure you will come down properly on your knee when you descend from a jump.

Note: There is no evidence to support that wearing a knee brace will prevent ACL injury.
